Description

These Ham and Cheese Butter Swim Biscuits are ultra-soft, buttery, and packed with gooey cheddar and savory ham. Baked in melted butter, they develop a crispy golden crust while staying incredibly tender inside. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a comforting side dish!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups (312.5 g) all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 cup (113 g) medium cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup (113 g) white cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup (135 g) cooked ham, diced
  • 1/4 cup (12 g) chives, chopped
  • 2 cups (490 g) buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:
    1. Set oven to 450°F (230°C).
    2. Spray a 7×11-inch deep baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Biscuit Dough:
    1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder.
    2. In a separate small bowl, mix medium cheddar and white cheddar cheeses.
  3. Combine Ingredients:
    1. Add 1 cup of the cheese blend, diced ham, and chopped chives to the flour mixture.
    2. Pour in the buttermilk and stir gently until mostly combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Assemble in the Baking Dish:
    1. Pour melted butter into the prepared baking dish.
    2. Place the dough on top of the butter and use a spatula (or your hands) to spread it evenly to the edges.
    3. Sprinkle the remaining cup of cheese on top.
  5. Bake:
    1. Bake for 26-28 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Rest & Serve:
    1. Remove from oven and let the biscuits absorb the butter before cutting and serving.
    2. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Deep Baking Dish is Key: Use a 2-3 inch deep dish to prevent butter from spilling over. If using a shallower dish, place a baking sheet underneath to catch any overflow.
  • Custom Variations: Try adding crumbled bacon, diced jalapeños, or a sprinkle of paprika for extra flavor.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for a few minutes for best texture.
